I can describe myself according to the following values which are: hard working, result oriented, punctual, impartial, open-minded, critical and rational. My list is inexhaustible but these are my strongest values. Before this semester, the most important values were being critical, hard working and being results-oriented. This however changed after I started this semester as I discovered new values which have proven to be of great benefit in determining my personality. Presently, I have endorsed the values of punctuality, impartiality, open-mindedness and rationality. These values have helped me to be open to new ideas and opportunities as change is always inevitable for a student. These values have helped me to gain more clarity and focus on setting my priorities right. My experience in this semester has changed my values in a positive way. These values have helped me to have a clear definition of my goals. I have been able to decide th e goals which are of most importance to me and consequently prioritize them according to the most significant. This process has enabled me to divert my energies towards my targets. Upon the achievement of my goals, I have been able to come up with new goals and try to accommodate them to my list of values (Ehrenreich, 2011). Knowledge has been defined as power but the main value of knowledge is brought out through the use of it. Knowledge is a compilation of facts. When we value knowledge, we draw near it with honest uncertainty. The main importance of knowing our values is to have a better clarity and focus to enable us to make reliable decisions and take a devoted action. The essence of knowledge of our values is to improve our results that are of most importance to an individual. This knowledge has enabled me to know and cherish myself and gain familiarity with my strengths and weaknesses. It has also helped me to use my strengths to assist others and to improve on my weaknesses (Heker, 1994). Our influence to others is of great importance as we knowingly or unknowingly influence others positively or negatively. Despite this, we should strive for the ultimate good by being an encouragement and inspiring them and this will help in making our world an improved place. King Nebuchadnezzar II Nebuchadnezzar II was a Babylonian king around 605 B.C. and was the second king in the Chaldean dynasty. He was born in 635 B.C. and died in the October of 562 B.C. He became King in 605 B.C. 3 weeks after his father’s death. He was 30 years old when he became king and reigned for 44 years. When he died his son, Amel-Marduk took over the throne. He wasn’t only a great king but a great warlord. He is known for conquering Jerusalem, deporting the king of Judah, Jehoiakim, and many of Jehoiakim’s people to Babylon. He and his father Nabopolassar commanded an army together north of Assyria. When he lead a campaign against the Egyptians and came back victorious, Babylon became the most powerful military force in the Middle East. When he was 25 he started acting as a military administrator. One year after his crowning he gets the oath of submission from the rulers of the local states in Syria and Palestine. When Nebuchadnezzar gets his first serious military defeat which was when he was fighting an Egyptian army, it weakened him politically and many of the states withdrew their oaths of submission. His other main achievements were revitalizing Babylon, rebuilding the temple of Marduk and a nearby ziggurat. The Median Wall was built under the reign of Nebuchadnezzar. The Ishtar Gate, one of the eight gates of the inner city of Babylon, was also built during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar II. King Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon dedicated the great Ishtar Gate to the goddess Ishtar. It was the main entrance into Babylon. His most famous achievement was creating the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Making time How In main theatres it can be hard to make time for patients as time is usually of the essence and the need for keeping the theatre list moving quickly and efficiently is paramount, but by simply talking to your patient while you are transporting them down to theatre can make all the difference, it helps calm the patient down, taking there mind off the operation they are about to have. By talking to them while you are transporting them you are still keeping to the time limits set out before you. Why Making time for a patient/individual is probably the most important thing you can do in a system where the patient may feel like there being dragged from pillar to post in a busy department where no one has time for them and feel that it’s a case of â€Å"get them in get them out† attitude. A person can be affected with blood disorder at any time in life, lifestyle, family history and some symptoms are always in which blood disorders are identified. Then we have our environmental issues also can cause blood disorders, it is very important to know what we are dealing with and how to prevent measures that will help us avoid any of the self made blood disorders. Some are being caused by bad nutritional habits, but we are very fortunate to be able to control some blood disorders; however there are those countries that have little available to overcome certain kinds of anemia. The blood disorders in the three case scenarios are all different, Iron deficiency anemia is a blood disorder that is affecting Amy who is a 4 year old Caucasian female, she has been complaining of being tired all the time she is a picky eater, because her mom cannot afford to feed a large family due to her being a single mom. The lack of iron deficiency or insufficient iron intake in the hemoglobin of the red blood cells can cause iron deficiency anemia. Amy needs a physical exam and needs blood work done to determine the cause of her anemia. Special blood tests are used to detect rare causes of anemia the blood test that Amy needs to get done are CBC (complete blood count) that determines the volume, size, number and hemoglobin content of her red blood cells. If the physician is still in doubt further testing may include checking the blood levels of iron and ferritin, a protein that binds iron in the blood, which may more accurately reflect the body’s iron level. Sometimes iron deficiency many not cause any symptoms, when iron deficiency has progressed to actual anemia, there can be fatigue, unusually pale skin, and a decreased ability to exercise. Since Amy does not eat a proper diet she really needs this blood test done and be seen by a pediatrician on regular basis. The recommended treatment for Amy is to improve her eating habits and to be monitored of her red blood cell count including her iron count. After being seen by a pediatrician she will be given a list of foods that she needs to include in her daily meals. Lean red meats, beans, egg yolk, whole grain products, nuts (making sure that Amy is not allergic to nuts) including seafood these foods are a great source of iron; she will also be given iron supplement to take on daily basis. Amy should go and see her pediatrician every three months to have her blood drawn to make sure that her iron deficiency anemia has improved. Iron deficiency usually is treated with iron tablets, syrups for children or injections; iron deficiency will last as long as its cause persists. Iron usually needs to be taken for many months to bring the levels back to normal. In this case we have Marcus a 5 year old African-American male who just moved to New York City, and is visiting his new pediatrician for a kindergarten physical. Marcus’ mother tells the nurse that she carries the â€Å"trait† and she wants Marcus to be screen for it. The â€Å"trait† is sickle cell which is a blood disorder that is inherited when there are two copies of the sickle cell gene in which one from each parent is present. Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects nearly 100,000 people in the United States. Sickle cell disease causes red blood cells to form into a crescent shape, like a sickle. The sickle-shaped red blood cells break apart easily, causing anemia; Sickle cell disease is most common in Africans and African-Americans. It is also found in other ethnic and racial groups including people from South and Central America, the Caribbean, Mediterranean countries, and India. Marcus needs blood a blood test done to see if he carries the ‘trait’ so he needs to give a blood sample. That blood sample is examined under a microscope, but sickle cell disease is diagnosed by a blood test call hemoglobin electrophoresis, which measures the amount of the abnormal sickle hemoglobin. Marcus has not had any episodes of the disease he will have to take preventative measures to avoid having complications or onsets of symptoms. Sickle cell causes the blood vessels to become clogged and the body tissues are deprived of oxygen and that will cause unhealthy organs and tissues. That is why Marcus will have blood test done to determine if carries the â€Å"trait’. In order to avoid any serious infection the pediatrician will have Marcus take penicillin until the age of 6 years old along with that he will be taking vitamin folic acid (folate) on a daily regime. Avoiding temperatures that are too hot or too cold should be avoided, Marcus must also drink plenty of water; also Marcus’ mom needs to take him to regular office visits in order to prevent the disease and to stay healthy. There is no cure for most people with sickle cell anemia. However, treatments can relieve pain and help prevent further problems associated with sickle cell anemia. Scientific research is being conducted to find ways to prevent cell. Thorough studies of gene therapy and ways to replace abnormal genes that cause sickle cell are being conducted on regular basis. There are treatments when people are in pain having fever, weakness or having hard trouble breathing, they will have IV treatments (intravenous) fluids and antibiotics. The sickle cell is passed from generation to generation in a pattern of inheritance; people with sickle cell have one normal gene and one defective form of the gene. According to the Mayo clinic a Bone marrow transplant offers the only potential cure for sickle cell anemia. But, finding a donor is difficult and the procedure has serious risks associated with, including death. Our last case is Richard who has noted over the past several weeks that he is having more bruises or ecchymosis, all over his body. After coughing this morning, he noticed tiny red marks all around his eyes. Richard could have a blood disorder that is called Thrombocytopenic it is a blood disorder that causes a reduction of platelets in the blood and it could be cause by certain drugs as heparin, histamine blockers, also this disorder also causes the blood not to properly clot and it is very important that Richard avoids any type of activity that will cause bruising and open wound injury. Richard will need a blood test to find out what is causing his blood disorder. He will need to visit his physician to have blood work done; the blood work will include a CBC, PTT, (Partial Thromboplastin Time), PT (Prothrombin Time) these test are done to evaluate the blood for its ability to clot, since that is what could be why Richard is bruised easily. Lab tests to determine the platelet count and clotting function may also be done. If indeed a diagnosed is confirmed then there is a treatment plan that will be discussed. Treatments can vary according to the cause. Corticosteroids may be used to increase platelet production. Lithium carbonate or folate may also be used to stimulate the bone marrow production of platelets. Again there is no cure for this blood disorder, but there are treatments which are steroids to help prevent bleeding by decreasing the rate of platelet destruction. These blood disorders have several things in common; there are no cures and no way to prevent them. Researchers are continually working very hard to find a way to prevent and hopefully cure these blood disorders. The best way to diagnose these blood disorders are to have blood test done to prevent and get treatment early in symptoms. But the most effect way with these blood disorders is by obtaining an early diagnosis as soon as symptoms are presented so a treatment can be started as soon as possible.

Augmentative or Alternative Communication for Disabled Students Augmentative or alternative communication (AAC) refers to all forms of communication outside of oral speech. It may range from facial expressions and gestures to forms of assistive technology. In the field of special education, AAC comprises all communication methods for teaching students with severe language or speech disabilities. Who Uses AAC? Broadly, AAC is used by people from all walks of life at different times. A baby uses non-spoken communication to express herself, as might parents coming home to sleeping children after a night out. In particular, AAC is the method of communication used by individuals with severe speech and language disabilities, who may suffer from cerebral palsy,  autism, ALS, or who may be recovering from a stroke. These individuals are unable to use verbal speech or whose speech is extremely difficult to understand (a famous example: theoretical physicist and ALS sufferer Stephen Hawking). AAC Tools Gestures, communications boards, pictures, symbols, and drawings are common AAC tools. They may be low-tech (a simple laminated page of pictures) or sophisticated (a digitized speech output device). They are divided into two groups: aided communication systems and unaided systems. Unaided communications are delivered by the individuals body, without speech. This is akin to the baby above or the gesturing parents. Individuals who are compromised in their ability to gesture, and those for whom communication needs are richer and more subtle, will rely on aided communication systems. Communications boards and pictures use symbols to help relay the individuals needs. For example, a picture of a person eating would be used to convey hunger. Depending on the mental acuity of the individual, communications boards and picture books may range from very simple communications- yes, no, more- to very sophisticated compendia of very particular desires. Individuals with physical impairments in addition to communications challenges may be unable to point with their hands to a board or book. For them, a head pointer may be worn to facilitate the use of a communication board. All in all, the tools for AAC are many and varied and are personalized to meet the needs of the individual. Components of AAC When devising an AAC system for a student, there are three aspects to consider. The individual will need a method for representing the communications. This is the book or board of drawings, symbols, or written words. There must then be a way for the individual to select the desired symbol: either through a pointer, a scanner, or a computer cursor. Finally, the message has to be transmitted to caregivers and others around the individual. If the student is unable to share her communications board or book directly with the teacher, then there must be an auditory output- for example, a digitized or synthesized speech system. Considerations for Developing an AAC System for a Student A students doctors, therapists, and caregivers may work with a speech-language pathologist or computer expert to devise a suitable AAC for students. Systems that work in the home may need to be augmented for use in an inclusive classroom. Some considerations in devising a system are: 1. What are the individuals cognitive abilities?2. What are the individuals physical abilities?3. What is the most important vocabulary relevant to the individual?4. Consider the individuals motivation to use AAC and select the AAC system that will match.
